The Numbers on Your Sheet, Explained Once

This is the page we send people to after a session, and the page we wish everyone read before one. None of it is secret. Most of it is simply never explained, which is how a golfer ends up owning a shaft they cannot describe and could not replace.

First principle

Weight Is the Decision. Flex Is a Consequence.

If you take one thing from this handbook, take this. The single most useful lever in a shaft is its weight, and the letter on the label is the least useful thing about it. Weight changes tempo, it changes where you sense the clubhead, and it changes how much the club wanders during transition. Two golfers with identical swing speeds can need shafts twenty grams apart, and the reason is entirely about rhythm rather than power.

A common and expensive mistake is treating lighter as automatically better. A shaft that is too light for a golfer with a quick transition produces a face that arrives at a slightly different angle every time, and the golfer experiences that as an inconsistent swing rather than as an equipment fault. Adding fifteen grams has rescued more of our clients than any head change.

The letter problem

Why Nobody Here Says "You Are a Stiff"

There is no standard behind the letters. One manufacturer's regular measures stiffer than another's stiff, models within a single family disagree with each other, and the same label on a fifty gram shaft and a seventy gram shaft describes two entirely different objects. We measure frequency in cycles per minute on a clamped butt, we look at how the profile behaves along its length, and we write those numbers on your sheet instead of a letter.

That is also why we can tell you what to buy if you ever replace a shaft without us. A frequency figure and a weight travel between brands. A letter does not.

Flex letters are a marketing convenience that survived long enough to be mistaken for a measurement.
Profile and tipping

Where the Shaft Bends Matters More Than How Much

Two shafts can measure the same overall stiffness while behaving completely differently, because the stiffness is distributed along the length in different proportions. A soft tip section with a firm middle launches higher and feels smoother through impact. A firm tip with a softer butt feels active in the hands while keeping the ball down. Neither is better. They suit different deliveries, and the only honest way to choose is to hit both.

Tip trimming

Cutting length from the tip end before assembly stiffens the tip section and lowers launch and spin. Cutting from the butt end changes overall stiffness far less dramatically. Manufacturer trim charts are a sensible starting point and nothing more, and we deviate from them regularly when the measured result disagrees. Your sheet records exactly what was trimmed, so the build is reproducible by anybody, including a shop in another state.

Torque

Torque describes resistance to twisting under load. It gets far more attention than it deserves in isolation, because it is heavily correlated with weight and material, and a golfer who thinks they are feeling torque is usually feeling weight. We record it, we rarely fit to it directly, and we are suspicious of anyone selling a shaft on that number alone.

Length and lie

The Two Cheapest Changes in Golf

Length is the most abused specification in the industry. Off-the-rack drivers have crept longer by well over an inch across three decades, which sells on a rack and fails in play. Shorter clubs are struck nearer the middle, and a centre strike beats a longer lever almost every time for a golfer who is not tour-consistent. Half of our driver fittings finish shorter than the club the client walked in with, and carry distance usually goes up rather than down, because the centre of the face is worth more than the extra inch was.

Lie angle is the other one. If the sole is not sitting flat at impact, the face points somewhere other than where you aimed, and the effect grows as the club gets shorter and more lofted. This is a genuinely large effect on wedges and it is measured, not guessed, using tape on the sole and a board. It is also the cheapest correction on our price list.

Static charts are a starting point. Wrist-to-floor and height give a first estimate for length and lie. Then we measure what happens dynamically, because posture, hand position at impact and shaft droop under load all move the answer. A dozen times a year those two numbers disagree by more than two degrees, and the dynamic one wins every time.
Grips and mass

The Two Specs Clients Forget Exist

Grip size and build-up

Grip diameter changes how freely the hands release the club. Too thin and the face closes quickly, too thick and it hangs open. Glove size is a hint, not an answer. We fit by looking at where your fingertips sit against your palm on a range of builds, then adjust with tape wraps, which costs pennies and moves face rotation more than golfers believe until they see it happen.

In this climate, texture matters as much as size. A smooth rubber grip in August humidity turns into something you have to squeeze, and squeezing costs speed and face control at the same time. Corded and hybrid builds are worth the slight loss in comfort for most golfers around the Bay.

Swingweight and total mass

Swingweight describes how heavy the head feels when the club is swung, and total mass describes how heavy the whole club is. They move independently and they do different jobs. Adding a heavier grip lowers swingweight while raising total mass. Adding tip weight raises swingweight while barely changing total mass. We set both deliberately, and the target goes on your sheet so a future regrip does not quietly undo the work.

The regrip trap. Fitting a heavier grip than the one that was on the club drops swingweight by roughly one point for every four to five grams. A whole set regripped without accounting for that comes back feeling dead, and the golfer blames their swing. Ask any shop what grip mass they are installing before they start.
A short glossary

Terms You Will Hear in the Bay

  • Dispersion — how widely your shots scatter around their average. The number we optimise for and the number retail fitting usually ignores.
  • Descent angle — how steeply the ball falls. Governs whether an approach holds a green, and it matters more here than raw carry because our greens firm up in August.
  • Effective loft — the loft actually delivered at impact rather than the number stamped on the sole. Shaft lean and face angle both move it.
  • Gapping — the carry distance between consecutive clubs. Even gaps beat long ones, and a bag with two clubs eight yards apart has a wasted slot.
  • Turf interaction — what the sole does as it meets the ground. Fitted outdoors or not fitted at all.
  • Frequency — measured stiffness in cycles per minute. The honest replacement for a flex letter.
