Salt Air and the Rust Line on Your Leading Edge

Bags that live within a couple of miles of the water come back to this bench in measurably different condition from bags that live out past the interstate. None of it is dramatic. All of it is cumulative, and almost all of it is avoidable.

I rebuild a lot of clubs. Somewhere over the years I stopped needing to ask where a client keeps their bag, because the clubs tell me. There is a particular pattern that shows up on sets stored in an unconditioned garage near the water, and once you have seen it a few hundred times it is as obvious as a postmark.

What Is Actually Going On

Two things, working together. The first is humidity, which around here sits high from May through September and does not drop much overnight. The second is salt aerosol, which the breeze carries inland further than most people assume. Neither one on its own does much. Together, salt draws moisture out of the air and holds it against the metal, so a surface that would have dried in twenty minutes stays damp for hours.

That is the whole mechanism. It is not that the air is corrosive in some exotic way. It is that a film of salty moisture sits on the steel for far longer than clean water would, and corrosion is a function of contact time.

The Rust Line Is Not Always a Problem

I want to be careful here because there is money to be made from scaring people. A raw or unplated wedge face developing a light patina is doing exactly what raw steel does, and a great many golfers deliberately buy that finish. Light surface oxidation on a wedge face has essentially no effect on how it performs, and some players believe it helps.

What matters is when it goes past a patina. If the corrosion has enough texture that you can feel it with a fingertip, particularly along the groove edges at the bottom of the face, it is no longer cosmetic. The groove edge is precisely the feature that does the work, and pitted, flaking edges do not do it. That is the point where I would say something rather than shrug.

A patina is fine. Texture you can feel along the bottom grooves is not. The difference is a fingertip, and it takes two seconds to check.

The Joint You Cannot See

The part that concerns me more than any face is the hosel joint. When moisture gets into the gap between the ferrule and the hosel and sits there through a humid summer, it works on the epoxy bond from the edge inward. There is usually no warning at all until a head comes loose during a swing, and by then the club has gone somewhere unhelpful.

Two signs are worth knowing. If a ferrule has lifted even slightly so there is a visible line at the shoulder where it meets the hosel, that gap is a moisture path. If a club has developed a faint rattle or a click that was not there before, stop using it and bring it in. Both of those checks are free here and take a minute.

The Routine That Prevents Nearly All of It

None of this is difficult and none of it costs anything worth mentioning. What it requires is doing it consistently rather than occasionally.

  • Dry the heads before the clubs go back in the bag. Not later. A towel over each head after the round, particularly after a wet or dewy morning.
  • If you played in rain, take the clubs out of the bag entirely for a few hours. A closed bag holds moisture against every head in it.
  • Rinse and dry after any beach-side course where you have been in sand. Salt in a groove overnight is the worst single case.
  • Store the bag inside the house, not in an unconditioned garage. This is the single largest factor and it is completely free.
  • Wash grips with warm water and a little washing-up liquid every few weeks. It restores more tack than golfers expect and delays replacement by months.
  • On raw or unplated wedges, a light wipe of a thin oil after drying at the end of the season stops the winter from doing damage the summer did not.
The garage is the whole argument. Of every recommendation on this page, moving the bag from an unconditioned garage into the house does more than the other five combined. Garages in this area track outdoor humidity almost exactly and then hold it, which means your clubs spend every summer night in the worst environment available.

What We Check When a Set Comes In

Anything on the bench for a regrip or a reshaft gets a corrosion look as a matter of course, and it is on the sheet whether you asked for it or not. Ferrule shoulders, hosel edges, groove edges at the bottom of every wedge face, and the shaft tip on anything we pull. Most of the time the answer is that everything is fine. When it is not, it is nearly always a set that has spent several summers in a garage, and the fix is a conversation about storage rather than a bill.
